The Overwhelmster & His Tricks

The Overwhelmster keeps us so busy that we feel like we can’t even take a moment to stop and think about what we’re doing.

“Hurry up!”

“You’re late!”

“Don’t do that. You should be doing this. No, not this. Do that!”

The Overwhelmster is kind of like the Distractor. It’s job is to keep you running and make you lose your focus. But the Distractor keeps you running after external things – shopping, Facebook, Whatsapp, movies, etc. The Overwhelmster makes you chase after your own internal priorities.

Just when you get focused on one thing -PING – a new thought pops into your head. And it feels much more urgent so you drop what you’re doing and run to do that.

Then – PING! Some other important thing pushes you… and another,,, and another.

And soon the whole day passes and you wonder what happened to it.

We can’t control the thoughts that come into our head, but we definitely can control what we do with those thoughts.

We can’t control the circumstances that arise to interrupt our focus, but we can control how we handle the stress and disruption caused by those interruptions.

The Overwhelmster’s trick is to get us to hurry faster, faster, faster.
“Don’t stop and think. Just Do, Do, Do!!!!”

So the first, most important thing to do when you're feeling overwhelmed is to do the complete opposite of what you might think.

Below are some Artnotes I wrote from a class on Chassidus about our true purpose by Rabbi Shaye Berkowitz in Los Angeles. This reminds us that all of the overwhelming details of our lives are really just one detail with a single purpose - to stay connected to G-d while we elevate the Holy Sparks in our lives.
